Vodou: Spirits of Haiti
My "collages" are based on Haitian Vodou symbolism, a rich and complex fusion of traditional African and later Christian religious beliefs and symbols. Because spiritual experiences often defy rational explanation, many cultures rely on symbolic representations, proverbs, or metaphors to express them. Hence, these symbolic expressions can be understood as a means of connection and communication between the spiritual and material worlds. Vodou symbols, in particular center around two intersecting lines which are considered to be the "crossroad or threshold" separating the material and spiritual realms. The symmetrical nature of the designs mirrors, and strives to integrate, opposing energies such as the visible and invisible, good and evil, earth and sky, masculine and feminine. In Vodou ceremonies, these sacred symbols are used to create a portal connecting the spiritual and physical worlds. Entering into the spiritual world, enables one to commune with the wisdom of the ancestors and the spirits of nature. Influenced by the folk art of the Caribbean, I have taken the liberty to use bright colors and simple forms to bring into sharper relief the wisdom and significance of each symbol.
These multi-media compositions are created from acrylic paint, paper, and wood. They measure 2 feet by three feet, with one larger central piece measuring 4 feet by 5 feet. The exhibit also includes installations made from driftwood, cowrie shells and raffia.
"Crossing the bridge" Love, intimacy, and race in America
Crossing the Bridge is an exploration of love, intimacy and race through a series of photographs and personal interviews that are a window into the lives of inter-racial couples and families spanning three generations. Their stories serve as both inspiration to the power of love and an unflinching look at race relations in our increasingly diverse communities.
